Detroit Mahjong

“For our first gathering, my sister has graciously agreed to join me to help teach the basics of American Mahjong, followed by guided play. I learned Mahjong by playing with people who could coach me through the game in real time, and I think it’s one of the easiest ways to learn. I’ve heard of people sitting through 3- or 4-hour classes and still walking away unsure of how to actually play! So rather than spending hours on instruction, we’re going to cover the fundamentals and then jump in and learn as we play.
Plan for the afternoon:
4:00 – Arrive, grab a drink/snack & get settled
4:20 – Mahjong 101: tiles, the card, basic rules, Charleston, etc.
5:00ish – Break into tables for guided play!
No prior Mahjong experience is needed. The goal is definitely not to leave knowing every rule — it’s to understand enough of the game that you feel comfortable sitting down and playing again.
Come ready to learn, laugh, ask lots of questions and hopefully get a little hooked.
